A terrorist attack strikes the very heart of Ardania. The music used as a weapon haunts as it destroys and a generation is thrown into war.

Silas Narkoff emerges from the rubble with the magical phenom Brynne Marshall, one worshiped one disgraces, both with a bone to pick with the cowards overseas.

The counter attack is launched and as Silas and Brynne navigate political mine-fields, a group of young cadets discover they might hold the key to stop these attacks once and for all.

I bought this book for three reasons: I love fantasy, the idea of music as a weapon (instead of a haven) and I really liked Tigers and Devils from Sean Kennedy. I think it's amazing if one author can master more genres.
So for the fantasy part: it's a nice and original story, with characters that have distinctive personalities, even though some of them were very stereotypical. Some of the situations are also easily traced back to situations in the real world. But that doesn't bother me: the rest of the fantasy part is great: it has magic, it has mystery, it has a made-up world with nations at war, it has a funny prime minister. Oh, and I like how every scene with the prime minister is written differently then the rest of the story. It might seem weird at first, but it works: you know what's going on in the senate, but you still stay a bit distanced.
The music-weapon part: The author knows his music (or knows how to bluff very well). I think almost everyone will agree that music has his own kind of magic: it can make you happy, make you want to dance and laugh, or it allows you to wallow in your mysery. Here, music is actually his own kind of magic. A kind that they are just starting to discover and I can't wait to see what lengths the music-magic can go in the sequel. I think there are a lot of options there, and I hope that they will be thoroughly explored. Though, I must admit, I think this story might have been better as a movie or tv-show: I think some of the scenes would provide for amazing music and goose-bump-worthy scenes. I had some goose bumps just reading about it and hearing the non existing music in my head.
The author part: Well. I'm confused. Is this really the same Sean Kennedy like Amazon says? I actually doubt it. The writing is totally different, it has a different feel about it. But okay, different genre, different feel, it's possible. Still, I wonder. So I started surfing after finishing the book and found... nothing. No connection found to the Sean Kennedy from Tigerland. No hits on the titel or the titel of the trilogy. So... Where did it come from?
Then there is one last thing that I want to mention because it really bothered me, and I know I won't be alone in this. I repeat: it's a good book, it has a great story but most of all: it has a lot of potential. But I feel sometimes it stays at the potential part in stead of evolving further. This is not helped by the editing problems: typos (okay, there may be some here as well, but I have an excuse: English is not my first language plus this is not a book you pay for :) ), sudden name changes (Tia becomes Mia, Broken Spear becomes Burning Spear), a lot of missing comma's and overuse of " in monologues making them seem like dialogues.
So, with some more practice and some more editing this could be an amazing trilogy, loved by every fantasy-geek out there. It just needs one final push/polish.

Parallel Strings The Dirge Book 1 eBook Sean Kennedy Reviews

Parallel Strings kept me interested and was well written. Sean Kennedy created a very different use of magic and it was intriguing.
A very compelling story. As Sean's first effort, there is room to move in terms of the prose itself, but I really look forward to the sequel(s).
